Many people reported this problem, mplayer immeiately crashes after launch, solution is simple , you need to create a folder named media under /private/var/, mplayer checks media files in /private/var/media when starting up, and it quits if the folder is not there.
btw. Mplayer works with firmware 2.2. make sure /private/var/media exists.

it still crashes, your 2008.11.11 version was ok though. Any reasons for the 2009.01.02 version to crash.
It's the same with me, the previous version worked, but this version immediately crashes. Does mplayer write any logs I could send you?
